About

The Dictionary Development Process (DDP) is a new method for producing a dictionary. It uses a set of tools and techniques designed to facilitate the development of dictionaries for minority languages. At the heart of the process is a list of semantic domains that can be used to collect words, classify a dictionary, and facilitate semantic research. Some materials have been translated into a number of languages, including Spanish, French, Swahili, and Malay. Translations for Chinese, Nepali, Thai, Tamil, Amharic, and Portuguese are being prepared.

Version 4 was released on March 30, 2006 and can be downloaded. DDP has also been integrated into SIL FieldWorks. Earlier versions of DDP were based on The Linguist’s Shoebox, The Field Linguist’s Toolbox, Multi-Dictionary Formatter, and Consistent Changes programs. The materials and tools for using DDP within the Shoebox/Toolbox platform are still available, but are no longer being supported or developed. Instead DDP will be developed within the FieldWorks environment. However the DDP word collection method is done in a workshop setting and is not dependent on any particular software package. The words can be typed into any dictionary software. However, the FieldWorks program has been specially designed for entering DDP workshop data, and then rapidly and efficiently developing it into a dictionary. We highly recommend that you use FieldWorks.

The ultimate goal of DDP is to provide all the materials, tools, and help necessary to produce a dictionary. Currently DDP can be used to collect a large percentage of the vocabulary of a language. Work has begun on materials to assist in defining words.

Downloads

Other supporting files can be found here.

Documentation Materials

These files are Microsoft Word documents.

  • Recommended folder name: \DDP_documentation.
  • Download the DDP documentation files (ZIP | 657 KB).

Semantic Domain Files and Toolbox Settings

To use these files, The Field Linguist’s Toolbox needs to be installed on your computer. The Toolbox program is an upgrade of the older Shoebox program. If it is not installed, download and install the Toolbox program first.

Semantic domains

If you already have a dictionary database, you will need to put the DDP databases with it. For instance you may want to put these files in a folder called \dictionary.

Some materials have been translated into a number of languages, including Spanish, French, Swahili, and Malay. Translations for Chinese, Nepali, Thai, Tamil, Amharic, and Portuguese are being prepared.

Download the list of semantic domains in Toolbox database format:

  • Chinese (ZIP | 525 KB) (The Chinese translation is from version 2 and is complete.)
  • English (ZIP | 567 KB)
  • French (ZIP | 243 KB) (The French translation is from version 1 and is incomplete. An updated translation is being prepared.)
  • Indonesian (The Indonesian translation is from version 4 and is complete. For the latest files, go to http://groups.google.com/group/ddp-ideas and choose Files.)
  • Malay (ZIP | 447 KB) (The Malay translation is from version 2 and is incomplete. The semantic domain files are only available as Microsoft Word documents at this time.)
  • Spanish (ZIP | 1,018 KB) (The Spanish translation is from version 3 and is complete. However it still needs a little editing.)
  • Swahili (ZIP | 620 KB) (The Swahili translation is from version 1 and is incomplete.)

Toolbox Settings Files

Download Toolbox Settings Files (ZIP | 11 KB)

When you open Toolbox, click on Project-Open, then select the folder that you put the settings files in, and then choose the project SemDom4.prj.

If you need more help, the Toolbox Help file (Toolbox.hlp) contains a page “User settings folder” that explains how to set up your settings folder.

Consistent Changes Tables

To use these files, Consistent Changes needs to be installed on your computer. If it is not installed, download and install Consistent Changes Program and Documentation.

  • Recommended folder name: \CCtables.
  • Download the set of Consistent Changes tables that are used with DDP (ZIP | 41 KB).
  • See List of Tables in the DDP documentation for instructions for using the tables.

Upgrade your dictionary to version 4

If you have been using any previous version of DDP, you can upgrade the semantic domain numbers in the \is (index of semantics) field in your dictionary to version 4. CC tables are available to convert any of the previous versions to version 4. DDP4_Version_Upgrades_Instructions.doc is included with the CC tables and explains how to upgrade your dictionary.

If you wish to import a dictionary developed with an earlier version of DDP into SIL FieldWorks, you need to run the appropriate CC table to upgrade your files prior to the import process.

  • Recommended folder name: \CCtables.
  • Download the set of Consistent Changes tables to upgrade to version 4 (ZIP | 36 KB).
