{"id":1852,"date":"2016-11-16T20:50:25","date_gmt":"2016-11-16T20:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/software.sil.org\/fieldworks\/?page_id=1852"},"modified":"2025-11-07T14:01:56","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T19:01:56","slug":"faq","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/software.sil.org\/fieldworks\/faq\/","title":{"rendered":"FAQ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a list of Frequently Asked Questions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"accordion-1\" class=\"accordion no-js\"><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-flex\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-flex\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tWhat does FLEx stand for?\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-flex\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t<strong>F<\/strong>ieldWorks <strong>L<\/strong>anguage <strong>Ex<\/strong>plorer.\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-test\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-test\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tIs FieldWorks cross-platform?\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-test\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The latest version of FieldWorks is Windows-only.<\/p>\n<p>FieldWorks 9.0 was released on Linux as a <a href=\"https:\/\/packages.sil.org\/fieldworks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flatpak package available here<\/a>. No new FieldWorks versions will be released on Linux due to the complexity of the technology and our limited developer resources.<\/p>\n<p>FieldWorks can be made to run on Mac and Linux using a Windows virtual machine.<\/p>\n<p>On a Mac, one free virtualization option is to use UTM with Windows 11. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dQDa0lWtgLM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See this video for how to run FieldWorks and other SIL software with UTM on a Mac.<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-help\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-help\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tWhere can I get help?\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-help\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\tYou can get help from the <a href=\"https:\/\/software.sil.org\/fieldworks\/support\/getting-help-and-training\/\">Getting Help and Training page<\/a>.\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-hash\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-hash\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tFLEx doesn't work when I install it.\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-hash\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\tThe first thing to do is to check the MD5 hash tag associated with the download package. This will verify that the download completed successfully. The MD5 hash codes associated with the downloads packages are available on the download page. You can use a free tool such as <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinemd5.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MD5 Hash Generator<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winmd5.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WinMD5Free<\/a> to verify the hash tag against the downloaded file. If the download is incorrect, try downloading it again. If it still doesn&#8217;t work, try reinstalling.<br \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-no-start\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-no-start\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tFLEx doesn't start. I get the message 'Msg: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.' with the source 'PalasoUIWindowsForms'.\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-no-start\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\tIt&#8217;s possible that something in the Windows settings files has gotten messed up. To fix this, in Windows Explorer, go to %UserProfile%\\AppData\\Local\\SIL. Delete anything to do with FieldWorks, Language Explorer and SIL FieldWorks. Then restart FieldWorks. Hopefully that will get things going again.<br \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-crash\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-crash\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tFLEx crashed unexpectedly and I see a message similar to 'Msg: Key 5cbcf087-b3ea-4173-90db-ebafa5ef94cb not found in identity map (actually just an ID is present)' in the crash that is generated.\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-crash\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\tIt looks like an error has gotten into your data. You should be able to correct the problem by running the Find and Fix Data utility.<br \/>\nTo run this utility:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open your project and make a backup. Then close your project. If you can&#8217;t open your project, save off the project directory as a backup and delete any occurrences of a file with the .lock extension in the project directory if one exists.<\/li>\n<li>Open a project *other* than the one you want to fix.<\/li>\n<li>Go to Tools \u2192 Utilities and check \u201cFind and Fix errors etc.\u201d Click \u201cRun checked Utilities Now.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Check the project you want to fix in the list of projects that appears. Click \u201cFix Links.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>If any errors are found, you will get a report of the changes.<\/li>\n<li>Click \u201cOK\u201d or press Enter and you should be good to go.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-restart\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-restart\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tI've tried what you've suggested here, but things still don't work. What should I try next?\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-restart\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\tTry rebooting your machine. That often fixes unusual problems.<br \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-project-directory\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-project-directory\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tWhere is my project directory?\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-project-directory\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\tThe project directory should be named the same as your project. Beginning in version 7 of FLEx, you can see its location by looking in FLEx under File \u2192 Project Management \u2192 Project Locations and Sharing. In version 9 of FLEx, you can see its location by looking in FLEx under File \u2192 Project Management \u2192 Project Locations.<br \/>\nThe default location is C:\\ProgramData\\SIL\\FieldWorks\\Projects.<br \/>\nIn XP, the default location is C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users\\Application Data\\SIL\\FieldWorks\\Projects<br \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-pathway\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-pathway\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tWhat to do if you are having problems with Pathway.\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-pathway\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\tIf you use the Reset button in the Pathway Configuration tool, it is supposed to fix the problems. If not, you could try making sure everything is clean by uninstalling and making sure the two folders are gone:<br \/>\nC:\\Program Files (x86)\\SIL\\Pathway<br \/>\nand<br \/>\nC:\\Users\\username\\AppData\\Local\\SIL\\Pathway (where username is replaced with your user name)<br \/>\nThen reinstall Pathway and it should work.<br \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-backup\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-backup\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tWhat to do if you get the message \u201cFile is not a valid Fieldworks backup\u201d when trying to open a project.\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-backup\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\tVerify that the backup file is using the same model as the version of FieldWorks. For example, trying to restore a backup made in version 9 when using FieldWorks 8.<br \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"faq-interlinear-failed\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-faq-interlinear-failed\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tFLExText Interlinear import error &ldquo;Interlinear Import failed. Are you sure you are importing a file in FLExText interlinear format? Word, Open Office, and Libre Office docs cannot yet be imported.&rdquo;\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-faq-interlinear-failed\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\tMost commonly this error occurs if the writing systems used by the data you are importing are not in the FLEx project you are trying to import into. If that is the problem, add the writing systems and it should work.<br \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 role=\"button\" id=\"Macs\" class=\"accordion-title js-accordion-controller\" aria-controls=\"content-Macs\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\tCan FieldWorks run on a Mac?\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"content-Macs\" class=\"accordion-content\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\tNo, unfortunately, FieldWorks only works on the Windows and Linux operating systems. However, you can run it in a virtual machine on a Mac.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>There are three choices for virtual machine software: VirtualBox, VMware, and Parallels. VirtualBox is free; the other two cost something.<\/li>\n<li>In order to run Windows on your virtual machine, you will need to buy a Windows license from Microsoft.<\/li>\n<li>Focal and Bionic Ubuntu are supported in FieldWorks and these operating systems are available free on the web. Wasta-Linux is a distribution of Ubuntu that has been customized for language work. The SIL Linux repository is included and standard SIL fonts have been added, so that SIL applications are ready for installation from the Software Center.
