The user is also requested to provide example sentences and words. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/a\/sil.org\/file\/d\/0BxzG868ube1caWJNSW8yUHFwdFU\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PowerPoint presentation<\/a> for more.<\/p>\n<p>The task of writing a grammar for a language can seem so overwhelming that many give up without even trying. Completing and revising a draft is a much less daunting task, and PAWS can provide that needed head start. (See <a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10125\/4532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black and Black (2012)<\/a> for more on this.)<\/p>\n<p>PAWS takes advantage of XML technologies to create \u201cactionable\u201d knowledge which can be turned into drafts of a grammar write-up as well as a draft of a grammar file that can be used by the <!--http:\/\/www.sil.org\/linguistics\/linguistics-software\/\/--> <a href=\"https:\/\/software.sil.org\/pc-patr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PC-PATR syntactic parsing program<\/a>. (See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sil.org\/resources\/publications\/entry\/7791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black and Black (2009)<\/a> for an explanation; see also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sil.org\/resources\/publications\/entry\/7783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simons and Black (2009)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sil.org\/resources\/publications\/entry\/7790\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black (2009)<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Some Details<\/h2>\n<p>On the Contents page near the top is a link to a page describing the purpose of PAWS.\u00a0 This page has links to the technical articles above describing the Writer and Parser outputs.<\/p>\n<p>The right hand column of the Contents page has instructions (in green) to help you know what to do.<\/p>\n<p>PAWS also comes with a number of resource files which you may find helpful for editing the draft of the Writer output and for refining the PC-PATR grammar output (should you choose to use it).\u00a0\u00a0 Use the Help menu item and choose Resources.<\/p>\n<p>Using PAWS is rather straight-forward.\u00a0 The biggest challenge is in dealing with the linguistic realities of the language you are using with PAWS.<\/p>\n<h2>Help Editing the XLingPaper Writer Output<\/h2>\n<p>For editing the <a href=\"https:\/\/software.sil.org\/xlingpaper\/\">XLingPaper<\/a>-based Writer output, there are three sets of PDF files of step-by-step instructions on how to edit the <a href=\"https:\/\/software.sil.org\/xlingpaper\/\">XLingPaper<\/a> draft.
