Usage, Permission, and Attribution Rules
for Items in the SIL Map & Illustration Repository
All illustrations in the repository—including maps and diagrams—have an “rules code” that indicates the set of usage and permissions rules that apply. For example, every map and diagram in the repository has a map ID that is comprised of three digits (grouping similar maps) and a two- or three-letter rules code. (e.g. 143gt) Normal, unlabeled illustrations, on the other hand, have illustration IDs that are comprised of a two-letter rules code plus a 5-digit sequence number. (e.g. gt00127)
In either case, you can use the rules code to look up the specific usage, permission, and attribution rules that apply to that item.
Every illustration in the SIL repository has an illustration ID that begins with a two-letter code indicating ownership, and the usage and attribution rules. Here are the rules for each code:
BA (Louise Bass — Color & Halftone Bible Illustrations)
Attribution
On the verso page, credit as follows:
Color [and/or halftone] illustrations [on pages ___] are used by permission of Louise Bass.
Usage Restrictions
The halftone illustrations are only permitted to be used in print publications. (Of course, digital publications are better off using the color versions anyway.)
Permission Requests
It is not necessary to request permission to use Bass color & halftone illustrations in SIL or Wycliffe publications. For all other publications, permission must be requested at tiny.cc/requestpermissions.
CO or CN (David C. Cook — B&W Bible Illustrations)
Each illustration must be individually credited where used:

In addition, if desired, a credit of all Cook illustrations can be added to the verso page:

In sensitive locations the credits on each picture and on the verso page may be replaced with:

Attribution in Sensitive Areas
To use these illustrations in sensitive areas where Wycliffe Bible Translators should not be named, the following copyright statement may be used instead:
Illustrations on pages ___ used with permission. All rights reserved worldwide.
Practically, this will mean anyone wanting to use the illustrations will need to contact the named copyright holder of the publication in which the illustration(s) appear, and they will in turn, contact the SIL illustration repository manager.
Usage Restrictions
In both print and digital publications you may crop and resize these illustrations, but not modify the images for your new work. Images may be rotated or flipped horizontally, provided this does not contradict historical fact or violate cultural norms.
DN (Darwin Dunham — B&W Bible Illustrations)
These illustrations may not be used in digital publications.

Permission is requested via e-mail. Reprints and revisions are required to have a new request for permission to use these illustrations. The request for the use of these pictures must include the following:
- The name of the organization, entity or group.
- The country, language and Ethnologue code.
- The title of the book in the vernacular.
- The type of book in English, e.g., New Testament, Bible, portion.
- The number of books to be printed.
- The number of illustrations and specific filename(s) of the illustration(s)/picture(s).

GT (Gordon Thompson — Maps & Diagrams)

The rights-holder of GT-coded masters is SIL Global, which has attribution agreements with Gordon Thompson and Wycliffe Bible Translators as reflected below.
Permission Rules
Permission is granted for maps derived from GT-coded masters to be used in any Scripture publication that follows the translation standards of the Forum of Bible Agencies International.
Attribution Rules
In non-sensitive areas, they should be credited as follows:

These illustrations may not be used in digital publications.
They are also not for use in the Middle East or North Africa without written permission.

“Adaptations may be made to these Illustrations, where necessary, to make them culturally appropriate for the target reader group. Such modifications might include, for example, the removing or adding of head coverings, changes in length of hair styles, adaptation of clothing, and alterations required to render the Illustrations culturally appropriate, and to remove items that might be culturally offensive. These modifications will be relatively minor and should not impact the message provided by each Illustration.”

Otherwise, in non-sensitive areas, they should be credited as follows:

where “20##” corresponds to the publication year of the volume as a whole.
For reprints or revisions where the map(s) have not been changed, the year of publication would be that of the original publication.
