FAQ
Where do I get the map templates to use with this?
All the maps in the SIL Map Repository will work with the Labeler.
Will this make map images?
The Labeler is for gathering labels for your maps. These labels can then be used in InDesign and Map Creator maps, where you can fine-tune the styles and layout.
How does this compare to the Scripture Map Labeler?
Paratext Diagram Labeler is the successor to Scripture Map Labeler. Here’s a comparison of the more significant features:
| Scripture Map Labeler (SML) | Paratext Diagram Labeler (PDL) |
|---|---|
| SML is integrated into Paratext 9 as a plug-in. | PDL is a standalone app that accesses Paratext 9 data. |
| SML will not be available in Paratext 10. | PDL is being developed as a Paratext 10 extension. |
| You enter labels for a map as “verses” in a designated chapter of an XX book. An accompanying Paratext resource named SMP1 shows you which labels to put in which verse. No additional context is provided. | You enter labels in either a graphical or table layout. The details pane shows additional context about the label. |
| The labels for related maps (e.g. maps of Paul’s first journey) are pooled together in the same “chapter”. It may not be clear exactly which labels will be used on which of the related maps. | Every map displays only the labels used on that specific map. |
| The labels for a map are stored in the chapter of the XX book in which you entered them. | The labels for a map are stored in an .IDML.TXT data merge file. |
| Ensuring consistency of use in the Scripture text requires parallel use of the Biblical Terms tool. | PDL integrates the functionality of the Biblical Terms tool. |
| SML generates data merge files for InDesign and Map Creator, though alignment with Map Creator labels is incomplete. | PDL generates data merge files for InDesign and Map Creator, or exports directly to pre-filled InDesign or Map Creator files for exact alignment. |
| SML supports all maps in the SIL Map Repository except the FMOSoft maps. | PDL supports all maps in the SIL Map Repository, with active work in progress to support additional map collections from partnering organizations, which will expand the number of available maps at least ten-fold. |
| SML includes in proposed labels every inflection of the place-name term, from which you must identify the correct one. It can be difficult to handle these in a way that you don’t have to repeat the process for each map using that label. This makes it difficult to use SML for languages with complex morphologies. | PDL bases its proposed labels on the uninflected form of the place-name, simplifying your task. |
