FAQ

What operating systems does DiagSap run on?

DiagSap runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

What graphic formats can DiagSap save?

DiagSap can save a diagram as a PNG file, an SVG file, or both.

How do I choose which formats to save?

Use File ▸ Save tree as .png and/or Save tree as .svg, and check the formats you want. DiagSap writes one file for each checked format, all sharing the same file name. It also saves a .diagsap file that stores your tree description so you can reopen and edit it later.

How do I describe a tree?

Type the tree as a set of nodes inside parentheses, nesting them to match the tree structure. For example, ((un)(lock))(able) describes the word unlockable. When you type a closing parenthesis, DiagSap briefly highlights its matching opening parenthesis to help you keep them balanced.

How do I show an infix?

Type the infix between an opening wedge and a closing wedge — for example, p<in>ag. When you type an opening wedge, DiagSap adds the closing wedge for you.

How do I put a real parenthesis or wedge inside a node?

Put a backslash immediately before it. A backslash tells DiagSap to treat the next parenthesis or wedge as ordinary text instead of part of the tree structure.

How do I start a description over?

Choose Tree ▸ Erase Description; Start All Over. DiagSap clears your description and replaces it with the standard starting tree, ((a)(b)).

Can I use dashed lines for a split infixed base?

Yes. Turn on Format ▸ Use dashed lines for split infixed base. The lines joining the two parts of a split base are then drawn as dashed lines.

Can I draw a tree right-to-left?

Yes. Turn on Format ▸ Draw tree right-to-left — useful for languages such as Hebrew.

Can I set the fonts and colors?

Yes. Use the Format menu to set the font, size, and color of the lexical forms, plus the background color and the color and thickness of the lines. These settings are saved with each individual diagram, so you can tune every tree to look its best.

Can I change the interface language?

Yes. Use Settings ▸ Change the interface language. The current version offers English, some French, and a rough Spanish translation.

Can I have curved lines or arrows in the diagram?

Not within DiagSap. You can, however, save the diagram as an SVG file and open it in a tool like Inkscape to add curved lines and arrows.

How do I get a sharp, high-resolution image for Word or PowerPoint?

Only Office 2016 and later can insert SVG files directly, so for older versions you need a high-resolution PNG. You can make one for free with Inkscape:

  1. In DiagSap, save your diagram in SVG format.
  2. In Inkscape, use File ▸ Open and load that SVG file.
  3. Use File ▸ Export and choose PNG.
  4. Set the width to a large value (such as 2000 or 5000 pixels).
  5. Click Export, then insert the PNG into Word or PowerPoint. If it is still not sharp enough, export again at a larger width.
