We welcome other developers who wish to get involved in supporting and enhancing this software.
PAWS is licensed according to the terms of the MIT License. The source code is available in the Github project sillsdev/cabhab. Further information on how to set up your development environment is included in the Github project documentation.
PAWS consists of a (large) set of configuration files that are read and processed by a container program. The container program is called cabhab and is written in C# and compiled using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. The configuration files are mostly XML files for page descriptions, writer outputs, and PC-PATR grammar outputs.
The key linguistic knowledge and usefulness of PAWS are encoded in these configuration files. The current set of configuration files were primarily developed by a non-programmer linguist. If you are a linguist and are willing to learn some basics of XML technologies, then you could potentially help expand the coverage of PAWS or help create a version in a language other than English, French, or Spanish.
The best way to contribute your enhancements is to fork the Github project, then submit pull requests to the development team. It would be helpful, however, for you to first contact the team to find out whether your intended enhancement or fix is already being worked on by someone else. That would also give you an idea of whether that enhancement would be welcomed by the team.
PAWS is under periodic development. Here is our general roadmap for the future:
Next maintenance update (0.11.0)
- Improvements to the French user interface and French writer output
Next main release (1.0.0)
- Improve the PC-PATR grammar output to reflect all the syntactic constructions asked about in the UI.
