How to Install
PAWS runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.
Windows
Download the installer and run it as administrator (right-click on the file you just downloaded and choose “Run as Administrator”). After successful installation, you will be asked if you want the PAWS program to start.
Mac OS X
- Download the installer.
- Double-click the installer file.
- Drag the PAWS icon to the Applications folder. PAWS will now be in your Applications folder.
- Note: if you get a message that PAWS has not been notarized, open up System Preferences / Security Privacy / General tab. PAWS should be listed and you should be able to click “Open Anyway.”
Linux
Follow these steps:
- Download the installer.
- Using a Terminal widow, navigate to where you downloaded the installer.
- If you have previously installed PAWS, remove the old version by typing
sudo dpkg -r paws
and press ENTER. - Now invoke the installer by typing
sudo dpkg -i name_of_the_downloaded_deb_file
and press ENTER.
When first running PAWS
You will be shown a dialog indicating that PAWS has not been run on your computer before.
- Click on the Create New Language button.
- You will be asked to save the newly created PAWS answer file in a directory. We suggest putting it in your Documents directory under a (new) folder called “My PAWS”. Type the name of the answer file you want to use in the “File name” box and press the Save button.
- This brings up the Language Properties page. Fill in each field for your language. When you are done, click on the Next button.
- This brings up the Answer and Result File Information page. Check the kinds of output results you want (what shows depends on which items are checked). Change the location of any output files if needed. Click on the Next button.
- This takes you to the main Contents page. You are set to go now.
The next time you start PAWS from the desktop icon, it will take you to the page you were last on (normally the Contents page).
If you are using PAWS to produce a grammar write-up, you may want to work your way through the first two or three sections and then take a look at the writer output. This should help you to see “the big picture” of how PAWS works. To produce the writer output, click on the Generate Files icon.
To use the PAWS-generated PC-PATR grammar file with a FLEx language project, do the following:
- Initial set-up
- Exit out of FLEx.
- Read the User Documentation.
- Download and install the Use PC-PATR with FLEx program.
- Run the FLEx program. Use the Tools menu item / Utilities…. Find the “Use PC-PATR with FLEx” item, check it, and then click on the “Run Checked Utilities Now” button.
- (The first time you do this, it will add the list of feature descriptors needed as well as create a custom field in senses called PCPATR.)
- To see the User Documentation: click on the “Help” button and choose “User Documentation.”
- Adding feature names in FLEx
- Use Lexicon / Bulk Edit Entries / List Choice.
- Show the custom PCPATR field.
- Set the Target field to PCPATR.
- Use filters to find the appropriate entries.
- Click on the “Choose” button under “Change to:” and select all the feature names needed. (Please note that if you’ve just added some feature names, this list will still have them selected; you will need to unselect them first.)
- Use the “Preview” and “Apply” buttons as normal to set the feature names for the selected entries.
- Category mapping
- The various “Category Mapping” pages talk about what category you use. The one used by the Use PC-PATR with FLEx program will be the category abbreviation in the default analysis writing system in FLEx. If this does not match what PAWS uses, enter the FLEx value in the box of the category mapper.
- Processing the test files:
- Import each test file into FLEx using File / Import / Standard Format Interlinear.
- Analyze the words in the text(s) by using one of the FLEx parsers or by hand. Be sure to include a word category (these will necessarily be shown using FLEx‘s values).
- In the Use PC-PATR with FLEx window, use the Browse button to select the PC-PATR grammar file.
- Use the “Disambiguate & show this text” button or the “Parse & show this segment” button to test the grammar on the text.
- Examine the results in the PcPatrBrowser tool (which comes up automatically).
